Corps warns about bear spotted near Walla Walla

July 22, 2013

A bear in Rooks Park just outside Walla Walla on Monday has prompted the Army Corps of Engineers to remind visitors to use caution.

A Corps employee and other visitors reported seeing the bear eating blackberries Monday along one of the park trails near Mill Creek two miles east of Walla Walla.

“It was obvious the bear wasn’t going to go away, so I turned around and found another trail to run,” said Jake Shaw, a Corps employees.

The Corps gets a couple of reports of bears each year during blackberry season, said Chris Alford, park ranger at Mill Creek.

“It’s best to be on the lookout for them and quietly go in a different direction if you see one,” he said in a statement.
