Republicans want to pass only meaningless and insulting immigration reform, repeal modest health care reforms after severely limiting them in the first place, limit government "intrusions" except those into women's bodies, subsidize agribusiness but not food for the poor, block all presidential appointments just to disrespect our first minority president, increase student debt to help Wall Street, generally deregulate and privatize everything that should be overseen by the people, and allow our planet to continue to warm and rot. Democrats are too conciliatory and unprincipled to stop them.
Both appear unconcerned about big brother spying on everyone everywhere. Socialism is the only alternative that could work within our democracy that has the potential to stop the tsunami of corporate greed threatening our very existence.
Democracy does not automatically mean capitalism, and socialist parties favor democracy. Capitalism assumes economic disparity in the citizenry and therefore the concentration of power among the elites, has proven itself unstable and unmerciful, and is therefore part of the problem.
Unions, despite their problems, remain the only institutions advocating for the human rights of ordinary workers, and the best hope for reforming society. Employees should have a 50 percent interest in all large businesses. That would be democracy.
