Benard, Hancock earn spots on Area Code baseball team

July 19, 2013

Hanford’s Isaac Benard and Kennewick’s J.J. Hancock — both seniors to be — were selected to represent the Tri-Cities at the New Balance Area Code Baseball Games on Aug. 5-10 in Long Beach, Calif.

The Area Code games serve as a valuable part of the Major League Baseball scouting process, as scouts from every MLB team will be on hand. The rosters, chosen after an invitation-only tryout, include the best high school players from around the nation competing at the highest level.

Benard, a Class 3A all-state selection as an outfielder, and Hancock, a first-team All-CBBN catcher, will play for the Kansas City Royals, a team stocked with 33 of the top players from Boise, Montana, Oregon and Washington, plus one from Canada.

Benard, the CBBN co-player of the year, led the league in batting (.541), home runs (9), RBIs (38) and runs scored (29).

The event will be televised on Aug. 6 on ESPN3.
