Letters: Elect Bowman for port commissioner

July 17, 2013

Leo Bowman was acclaimed as a Benton County Commissioner for 16 years and I've known him longer.

But even so I still occasionally discover aspects of Leo's character that surprise me, impress me, make me think, "This is the kind of man who belongs in public office."

He quietly does nice things for people just because he can. I didn't know, for instance, that for years Leo has been buying and donating school supplies for indigent kids. Several bagsful at a time; more than you can carry in a single trip.

Hardly anyone knows that for years Leo has gotten up early every Sunday morning to read the Tri-City Herald to blind Tri-Citians over a special radio network. His listeners can't read the paper themselves so Leo makes sure they are not shut out of something most of us just take for granted. He does it because it needs doing and because he can.

Character is what a person does when no one is watching and Leo does good things when no one is watching.

He does his homework and he puts others' interests before his own.

I think he's perfectly suited for election as a Port of Kennewick Commissioner.
