Honduras blanks Haiti to open Gold Cup play

Rony Martinez and Marvin Chavez scored to lead Honduras to a 2-0 win over Haiti in the first round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Monday night in Harrison, N.J.

Mario Martinez made a through pass to Rony Martinez, who was in front of Haitian goalkeeper Frandy Montrevil and took a powerful high shot to open the scoring in the third minute.

Honduras made it 2-0 on a goal by Chavez, who came off the bench. Bryan Beckeles made a low cross from the right wing, and Chavez took a shot that found its way to the back of the net.

In the first game of the Gold Cup doubleheader, Kenwyne Jones scored in the 72nd minute to give Trinidad and Tobago a 2-2 draw with El Salvador.

Jones got in the box and beat El Salvador goalkeeper Dagoberto Portillo with a crossed shot to tie the game.

Rodolfo Zelaya scored twice for El Salvador. His goal on a header in the 68th minute gave El Salvador a 2-1 lead. Zelaya also scored in the 21st minute on a free kick. He put his shot over Tinidad and Tobago’s wall of players and into the net to tie the game at 1.

Keon Kelly Daniel gave Trinidad and Tobago a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Daniel took advantage of a loose ball after some confusion on El Salvador’s defense, made a run to the goal and was able to beat Portillo with a low shot to the post.

Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador, Haiti and Honduras are in Group B of the 12-team tournament, which is held every two years and determines the championship of national teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

Trinidad and Tobago will play Haiti in its next match, and Honduras will face El Salvador. Both matches will be Friday in Miami.

The United States faces Belize in Group C at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Portland.

The deal is worth up to $6.6 million. … Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona, who has spent the past year as ambassador for the Dubai Sports Council, will have his contract extended. Further details were to be announced Tuesday.
