Letter: Commendable commentary

July 8, 2013

Bravo! Bravo! I commend Jochen Engelke (In Focus, June 23) for his spot-on commentary on immigration from the perspective of a legal immigrant. He outlines exactly what this country needs to do to preserve its integrity and strength! He also rightly says we should not single out any particular industry or segment for special treatment, including agriculture -- and he's a farmer! Thank you, Mr. Engelke, for having the courage to stand up for what's right, despite the potential personal consequences!

I personally know several German, French and French-Canadian legal immigrants from the 1960s, '70s and even '90s, who live here in the Tri-Cities, and who never once looked for a single government handout. Instead, they strove to make their way in their new country by learning English, pursuing a career, working hard, furthering their education when necessary and raising a family with a good moral compass.

On top of that, they all studied and successfully passed the requirements to become bona fide U.S. citizens. I am so proud of each and every one of them for doing it the way it is supposed to be done -- legally!
