Kennewick's Mandell in 4th at PNGA Amateur

July 6, 2013

Extremely windy conditions hampered the first round of the 112th PNGA Men’s Amateur Championship, being played at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore.

That didn’t stop Kennewick’s Nick Mandell, who fired a 73 on the first day to put him in fourth place.

Mukilteo’s Mark Strickland scored a 1-under par 69 at the Bandon Trails course to lead an elite field of 168 amateurs in the first round of stroke play.

Strickland, a sophomore on the Western Washington University golf team, survived conditions that included 25-30 mph winds with gusts up to 40-50 mph.

Kennewick’s Riley Hayfield and Daniel Cruzen are both tied for 14th with 75s.

Other Mid-Columbians include Richland’s Scott Kim with an 80; Richland’s Tanner Martin with an 84; Walla Walla’s Ryan Baumgart with an 85; Richland’s Minwoo Park with an 86; Walla Walla’s Mason Palmer with an 89; Richland’s Josh Harvey with a 95; and Richland’s Jeff Marcum was disqualified.

The tournament continues today.
