Letter: 'Fair' tax isn't fair to lower-middle class

July 2, 2013

Jamie Wheeler's letter of June 18 promotes the "Fair" tax bills (HR25/S122) as the means of eliminating the Internal Revenue Service. These bills impose a sales tax on just about every expenditure that involves the payment of money.

The tax rate for property and services in 2015 would be 23 percent. This is an increase in taxes paid by the lower-middle class and a very large decrease in taxes paid by the top income brackets.

To me, "fair" taxation is having those who can best afford it pay a higher amount, as is done in our current tax codes.
