Letter: 'Renewable' energy intitiative drives up utility rates

June 30, 2013

Wouldn't it be interesting to know how much of the requested Pacific Power rate increase is because voters passed the initiative promoting "renewable energy," which excludes water through existing dams from being classified as "renewable?"

The percentage of "renewable" energy required to be used continues to increase and has not yet peaked. As a result, rates will continue to increase as power companies are forced to buy more -- even if not needed -- since the power generated by existing dams (our cleanest and most reliable form of renewable energy) does not qualify. So far, the state's legislators have refused to correct that.
