Alpine club announces upcoming hikes

The InterMountain Alpine Club is planning the following hikes:

-- The Esmeralda Basin Loop Hike is on June 29.

It is limited to 12 hikers.

This hike is in the North Fork Teanaway River area. It is about 11 to 12 miles round trip with about 2,800-feet-elevation gain. Be prepared for all weather.

A Northwest Forest Pass is required.

Meet at 6:30 a.m. at the TRAC facility, 6600 Burden Blvd., Pasco.

-- The Blue Mountain Loop is from July 4-7.

The club says the hike is a version of trip No. 89 in 100 Hikes in the Inland Northwest by Rich Landers. About 15 miles of it follows the top of Smooth Ridge and is rated as the most scenic trail in the Wenaha/Tucannon Wilderness Area.

It will be a strenuous hike, and participants must be experienced backpackers in excellent condition, able to do 10 to 13 miles and up to 3,400-feet-elevation gain per day.

Meet at 6 a.m. at the TRAC facility, 6600 Burden Blvd., Pasco.

Costs is about $22, plus $1 to $4 for trip fees.
