Crossing guard cat Sable missing from new home

June 18, 2013

Sable, a “crossing guard cat” who made national news last year, is missing.

Sable was last seen three days ago, said his former owner, Tamara Morrison of West Richland. Morrison’s family recently gave away the cat, who is at least 15 years old, to a teacher at Enterprise Middle School.

The family is moving to Colorado and the teacher, who lives on Johnston Avenue near Chief Joseph Middle School in Richland, volunteered to take Sable in.

But Sable wasn’t comfortable in his new surroundings, Morrison said. “He was very unhappy, so they let him outside, and he took off,” she said. Morrison is worried that Sable is trying to get back to her mother-in-law’s house on Eagle Street, where the family has lived for the past year and a half.

The black domestic shorthair likely misses his daily routine of going out to the crosswalk where kids walk across the street to Enterprise, Morrison said. Each morning and afternoon, he typically arrived about 5 minutes before the students, wearing an orange safety vest Morrison bought for him at a pet store.

Sable was awarded an “Honorary Safety Patrol Member” certificate. The story appeared on Yahoo, Huffington Post, ABC News blogs and the New York Daily News.

Sable is likely trying to get back to work, Morrison said. “He’s got to try to cross the Yakima (River),” she said. “It really worries me.”

Sable will be allowed to stay at the home if he can make it back. The Morrisons plan to install a cat door to help him get out and back in.

Anyone who sees Sable is asked to call Morrison at 308-5057.
