Sunnyside man sentenced for gun charge

Yakima Herald-Republic, Wash.June 15, 2013

— A Sunnyside gang member with a lengthy juvenile record earned his first felony as an adult and a three-year prison sentence on a gun charge Friday.

Daniel Maldonado, who turns 20 in two weeks, was sentenced to the middle of the range of 31 to 41 months for his guilty plea to a charge of first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

Maldonado was one of three documented gang members who were arrested on warrants following a traffic stop on Dec. 1 in Sunnyside, according to court records.

Police said a Taurus .38 Special was found in the glovebox of the car and that Maldonado claimed ownership of the pistol.

Maldonado was not legally entitled to possess a firearm due to juvenile convictions for theft, burglary, trafficking in stolen property and third-degree assault. The pistol was fully loaded with hollow-point ammunition, police said.
