June 6, 2013

Brandon Agnew of Snohomish shot a 4-under-par 68 to lead the East qualifier for the state men’s amatuer Thursday at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla.

Thirty-one golfers advanced to the 87th Washington State Men’s Amateur Championship set for June 18-20 at Chambers Bay in University Place. The field of qualifiers included seven from the Tri-Cities and one more from Walla Walla.

Among those advancing is Kennewick shooter Riley Hayfield, who shot 71 to finish in a three-way tie for second.

Kennewick’s Nick Atkin and Richland’s Tanner Martin, two weeks removed from finishing eighth at state for Hanford High, were a stroke back to tie for fifth.

Richland’s Dana Kain and Pasco’s Samson Martinez shot 74 (tie for 15th), and Kennewick’s Jack Tumlinson tied for 20th with a 75. Walla Walla’s Ryan Baumgart, who won his third consecutive state title for DeSales two weeks ago, qualified with a 77 along with Tom DeForest of Kennewick.
