— Four people, including two children, died Sunday when the SUV they were in went into a canal after colliding with a car west of George, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

The collision happened around 8 a.m. on County Road 1 and Beverly Burke Road. The SUV collided with the car at an intersection and went through a guardrail into the canal, said Public Information Officer Kyle Foreman. The SUV was carried about 100 yards downstream by the current and went under water.

Sheriff’s office dive teams removed everyone from the SUV around 90 minutes later, Foreman said. A man and woman were pronounced dead at the scene and the two children were pronounced dead at Quincy Valley Medical Center a short time later.

A woman who was driving the other car suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the medical center, Foreman said.

Her condition was not immediately available.

The sheriff’s office is not releasing the names of the deceased or if they are related until their next of kin are notified, Foreman said.

In his 21 years in law enforcement, the collision is the most tragic incident he has ever been to, Sheriff Tom Jones said in a release.

Burke Road is a main route people take to get to the Gorge Amphitheatre, Foreman said.
