Othello softball takes third the hard way at 2A state tourney

By the Tri-City HeraldMay 25, 2013

The Othello softball team had its back against the wall Friday after losing their first-round game of the 2A state tournament to W.F. West.

But the Huskies turned things around for themselves, winning the next five games to take third place Saturday at Carlon Park in Selah.

“That’s a long way to come back,” Othello coach Rudy Ochoa said after the program’s ninth trophy finish in school history and highest since winning the 2A state title in 2008.

Othello topped Sedro Wooley 11-7 in the trophy game thanks to a six-run outburst in the third inning that sparked a commanding lead. Still, Huskies coach Rudy Ochoa wasn’t totally confident with any lead in that game.

“Both sides were hitting the heck out of the ball. It turned into a slugfest,” he said.

Tori Zambrano and Madison Martinez each went 3-for-4, and Kirsten Quigley blasted two home runs to spark the offense. Quigley finished 11-for-17 with three home runs on the day, which consisted of four games total.

“She’s our No. 8 hitter. She also made some nice catches,” Ochoa said.

Martinez was a workhorse, pitching four complete games. She also went 3-for-5 in a 14-6 rematch win over W.F. West to clinch a spot in the third-place game.

“Actually, the girls were very tired. It was pretty grueling,” Ochoa said. “On the positive side, we were in a hitting groove that carried over from one game to the next.”
