Letter: Arlene's Flowers flap could bring gay marriage back to ballot

May 24, 2013

I wrote a Letter to the editor in October, sharing that the upcoming vote on gay marriage was a tough decision for me; there were valid reasons for and against. I voted in favor of gay marriage, believing the new law protected people opposed for religious reasons from being forced to participate in gay marriages and believing there was an unwritten gentleman's agreement -- straights would respect gays' choice to marry and gays would respect some straights' choice not to participate.

I was wrong on both counts. Gays (two bad apples) have sicced the pit bulls on a little mom-and-pop flower shop. This would be different if it were a major chain. I think Arlene's Flowers was targeted because it will not have large legal (financial) resources for a big battle.

Incidents like this will return gay marriage to the ballot; I will vote differently. Gay Community, it's not too late (it's politics) to contact the attorney general and the American Civil Liberties Union and tell them this is not the battle you want. In the long run it will be a lose-lose.
