The Iceman: Based on true crime and riveting

Gary Wolcott, atomictown.comMay 22, 2013

I see more than 200 movies a year. Ask anyone who sees movies with me or who talks with me frequently about movies -- I never say a movie is too short. Yet, when it was obvious The Iceman went into conclusion mode, I wanted more.

It's the riveting "true" story of real-life hit man Richard Kuklinski, who is said to have murdered 100 people in the 1970s and 1980s before his capture and eventual incarceration in 1986.

Michael Shannon -- the villain in the new Superman movie -- is Kuklinski. He's an exceptionally good character actor and nails the introverted Kuklinski. Co-starring are the always exceptional Ray Liotta as his maniacal employer; Winona Ryder as Kuklinski's wife; and an unrecognizable Chris Evans (Captain America) and David Schwimmer (TV's Friends) as others in the same business. Look, too, for an interesting cameo from James Franco.

This is an exceptionally well-written, acted and filmed movie. Director Ariel Vromen and writer Morgan Land base the story on a book and a documentary about Kuklinski. If films like Goodfellas or similar movies are your thing, then you'll love this one.
