Washington State University GEAR UP provided funds for the kits that students used to build their own hull designs around. "They're trying to apply what they've learned from their other classes into one project," said Tom Mileson, technology teacher at Park. Morando ended up winning the championship race.

Students at Park Middle School in Kennewick spent Monday testing out boats they designed during the second annual boat races in the temporarily flooded school courtyard.

The students used materials from kits provided by Washington State University GEAR UP and worked in teams to design the rest of the boat.

"They're trying to apply what they've learned from their other classes into one project," said Tom Mileson, technology teacher at Park.
