East rolls at SCAC district softball

May 18, 2013

If cream rises to the top, then the East definitely creamed the West at the SCAC district, sweeping all four berths to state from the games at Hanford High on Saturday.

Unbeaten defending champion Connell rolled to the title with a 10-0 win over Warden in six innings. River View and Columbia (Burbank) also advanced to state as the third and fourth seeds to next week’s tournament at Columbia Playfields in Richland.

Speaking of rising, Ashley Thompson tossed a pair of no-hitters for the Eagles, bringing her season total to 13. She was a walk away from perfection against Warden, and she struck out 25 batters on the day to raise her career total to 1,056.

“We believe she broke the unofficial state record with 1,045 career strikeouts against River View,” coach Andy Sawyer said.

Michelle Schultz drove in four runs for Connell in the title game. Savannah Egbert had five RBIs on the day, including three in a 12-0 win over River View.

The Panthers bounced back from the semifinal loss to beat Naches Valley 13-6 and secure a state berth. Freshman Rachel Doran had a key two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning that got River View rolling. Ashley Dickinson finished 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

Finally, River View topped Burbank 16-14 in the seeding game as both teams’ pitching felt the brunt of three straight games.

Catcher Shelby Salter, behind the plate all day, had enough endurance to go 4-for-4 for the Panthers.
