Soccer: Hanford advances to face Kennewick in quarters

May 14, 2013

Mario Zarate took a pass from Jacob Bogen in the 47th minute and blasted a 30-yard shot into the side netting, giving Hanford the only goal of the match in a 1-0 win over Juanita in the first round of the Class 3A state boys soccer playoffs in Richland.

The Falcons (14-6) will face Kennewick (16-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Lampson Stadium with a Final Four berth on the line. Hanford last reached the 3A semifinals in 2002, finishing fourth.

“It’s a great opportunity for us. I think it will be a great environment with two local teams playing each other for the third time,” Hanford coach Mike Pardini said. “We’ve got our work cut out for us. They’re a very disciplined team on defense but they still have some flair at forward.”

Falcons goalkeeper Jacob Thiel made seven saves for his third playoff shutout and eighth of the year.

Scoring—1, H, Mario Zarate (Jacob Bogen), 47:00. Shots—J 7, H 14. Saves—J, Dominik Mayr 13. H, Jacob Thiel 7.

GRANDVIEW 4, EAST VALLEY (SPOKANE) 0: Host Grandview used a two-goal swing around the 30-minute mark to take control of its first-round 2A state tournament match against East Valley of Spokane.

Greyhounds keeper Elmer Campuzano made a stop on an East Valley penalty kick, then 30 seconds later Martin Barragan scored off an assist from teammate Victor Valencia to give Grandview a 1-0 lead.

And that opened the floodgates.

“It acted like a cattle prod,” said Greyhounds coach Anne Holden. “From then on were able to, at will, go attack.”

Edwin Salgado converted two penalty kicks, and Ricardo Serrato finished the scoring with a goal.

Campuzano made six saves for Grandview, as the defense pitched another shutout.

“Our defense is giving up a goal every 2 1/2 games,” Holden said.

Grandview will play the winner of tonight’s West Valley-Yakima at Cheney game, most likely on Saturday in a 2A state quarterfinal game.

Scoring—1, G, Martin Barragan (Victor Valencia), 31:00. 2, G, Edwin Salgado PK, 51:00. 3, G, Salgado, PK, 60:00. 4, Ricardo Serrato (Ismael Montes) 69:00. Shots—EV 6, G 10. Saves—EV, Adam Bromley 6; G, Elmer Campuzano 6.
