Fisherman finds body near Horn Rapids Dam

May 12, 2013

— A fisherman on the Yakima River spotted a body about 6:10 a.m. Sunday morning near the Wanawish Dam, or Horn Rapids Dam, near Richland.

Columbia Basin Dive Rescue removed the body of a man near the shore on the Highway 240 side of the river, said Sgt. Bob Brockman of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. The death is being investigated as a drowning.

Law enforcement officials also are investigating whether the body is that of a missing Grandview man. The Prosser Police Department will release more information todayMonday, said Prosser Sgt. Ed Blackburn.

Miguel “Mike” Gomez, 31, was last seen at a gas station in Richland the morning of May 5. His gray PT Cruiser was discovered across from the VFW hall in Prosser a short time later with his cellphone inside.

A friend said she had plans to watch a boxing match with Gomez on May 4, but he did not show up and did not return text messages.

Prosser police said last week that they did not suspect foul play and that there was no indication Gomez wanted to commit suicide.

Police searched the area where Gomez’s car was found with a helicopter and search teams.
