Whitecaps pull upset on Galaxy

Russell Teibert scored his first two MLS goals to lead the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night in Vancouver, B.C.

Darren Mattocks also scored for the Whitecaps (3-4-3), who ended a seven-game winless streak and beat the Galaxy for the first time.

Gyasi Zardes scored the goal for Los Angeles (4-3-2), which was unbeaten in five previous regular-season meetings and also eliminated Vancouver in the opening round of the playoffs last year.

Teibert opened the scoring in the 63rd minute as he took a pass near the right corner of the Los Angeles box, cut back toward the middle and fired in a left-footed shot to put the Whitecaps up 1-0.

Teibert’s second goal, in the 76th, proved to be the winner as he sent a through ball to the corner of the Galaxy box, where Gershon Koffie passed it back to him for a left-footed strike.

FC Dallas 2, D.C. United 1: In Frisco, Texas, Je-Vaughn Watson’s goal in the 77th minute helped FC Dallas extend its unbeaten streak to nine matches (7-0-2).

Union 1, Fire 0: In Bridgeview, Ill., Jack McInerney scored his league-leading seventh goal of the season as Philadelphia edged Chicago.

Impact 3, Real Salt Lake 2: In Montreal, Matteo Ferrari scored in extra time for the Impact.

Red Bulls 1, Revolution 1: In Foxborough, Mass., Lloyd Sam had a goal in the 55th minute to lift first-place New York to a draw with New England.

Rapids 2, Crew 0: In Columbus, Ohio, Edson Buddle and Dillon Powers scored in Colorado’s second consecutive win.
