Prep Tennis: Richland boys pick up all 4 regional berths

May 11, 2013

With only two singles players and two doubles teams qualifying for next week’s 4A regional tournament, the Richland boys team took it upon itself to secure all four spots at Saturday’s 4A Mid-Columbia Conference district tournament in Pasco.

The Bombers also won the boys team title with 34 points, while Walla Walla won the girls title with 41 points.

Richland sophomore Trent Prussing won the boys district singles title with a 6-1, 0-1 (retired) victory over senior teammate Greg Giucci, who was having a difficult time holding his racquet in the second set.

“It was really good for the team to have everyone advance to regionals,” Prussing said. “We have a good chance of getting a lot of people to state.”

The 4A regionals will be at Richland on Saturday — much to the liking of Prussing — with the top two singles and doubles teams advancing to state, also at Richland High.

“Sleeping in and not having to travel are the best part of that,” he said.

Prussing, who was third in No. 2 singles at the Inland Empire and second at No. 2 singles at the Tri-City Invite, was never really challenged in the tournament.

He topped Walla Walla’s Micah Rambo 6-2, 6-1, then cruised past Chiawana’s Javan Olin 6-1, 6-2. In the semifinals, Prussing beat Josh Kuznetsov of Walla Walla 6-4, 6-3.

In the doubles finals, Zach Fisher and Travis Zuroske defeated fellow Bombers Taylor Armstrong and Callum Pe 6-4, 6-2.

Fisher and Zuroske opened the tourney with a bye, then lost only one game in cruising into the finals.

Walla Walla’s Danielle Thongdy won the girls singles title, beating Chiawana’s Julie Campos 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles, the Blue Devils also took the top spot as Allison Mehn and Rachel Schueller topped Richland’s Hailey Thompson and Madeline Quick 6-1, 6-3.

3A Districts: Hanford senior Sierra Troxel won her third consecutive district title, beating Kennewick’s Stephanie Bucking-ham 6-0, 6-1 at Hanford High. Buckingham will play Hanford freshman An Wang on Monday for the second seed to regionals.

The Southridge girls won the district title, led by the doubles team of Sarah Morgan and Sofia Morison, who defeated teammates Katie Brunson and Beth McKay 6-2, 6-2.

Southridge’s Bailee Sanderson and Shyler Sullivan then upset Brunson and McKay for the second seed to regionals 6-3, 7-5.

“They really outperformed themselves and exceeded my expectations this year at district,” Suns coach Chuck Hamaker-Teals said. “They went 1-2-3. I don’t think that has been done in five or six years. It shows the depth we had when the No. 3 team could upset the No. 2 team, which went undefeated in the regular season.”

In boys action, Hanford won the team title behind the doubles team of Shane Sandlin and Kevin Sands, who defeated teammates Darko Stankovic and Quinten Dicken 6-3, 6-3 at Richland High.

Kennewick’s Chad McKenzie won the boys singles title, topping Ethan Ling of Southridge 6-0, 6-0. Both advance to regionals.

The boys third-place singles match was unavailable. In doubles, Kamiakin’s Ben Welch and Matt Inman grabbed the No. 3 seed.
