Inslee signs irrigation district finance bill

By the Herald staffMay 10, 2013

A House bill that will allow irrigation districts to offer local improvement districts financing opportunities was signed into law this week by Gov. Jay Inslee.

House Bill 1416, which was sponsored by Rep. Judy Warnick of Moses Lake, specifically will help the East Columbia Basin Irrigation District farmers and allow for the recent Odessa Subarea Special Study to be implemented.

The bill will help ensure the district can finance the wid-ening of the East Low Canal and supply water to an additional 70,000 acres in the Odessa Subarea, Warnick said.

The bill also will provide irrigation districts with the same provisions as local governments for LIDs and update current practices. It unanimously passed in the House and Senate during the regular session.
