HAPO adds events to summer of fun

By Dori O'Neal, Tri-City HeraldMay 9, 2013

It'll be a blast of fun this summer with all sorts of new events being added to traditional celebrations around the Tri-Cities.

New events have been added to some of the celebrations this year, like an autocross at Cool Desert Nights and new planes to the HAPO Over the River Air Show.

HAPO Community Credit Union will be the major sponsor of the additional events, which were announced at a press conference Thursday.

Kicking off the HAPO Summer of Fun in the Mid-Columbia will be the first Live@5 concert May 30, featuring the music of Flash Mob.

Live@5 is an outdoor event held Thursday evenings at the John Dam Plaza in Richland. One concert in the series will be July 3 because of the conflict of Fourth of July festivities, which happens on a Thursday this year. Different Tri-City musicians are featured each week.

Other bands performing are Foolish Fortune on June 6; Primitive Circus on June 13; Groove Principal on June 20; 3rd Date on June 27; Fall Out on July 3; Colorblind on July 11; Voodoo Alley on July 18; and Dance Hall Days on July 25.

Cool Desert Nights bumped up its traditional three-day event to four days this year, from June 20 to 23 in Richland.

There will be slow drags, all-city car cruises, pancake breakfasts, show and shines and street dances from June 21-22.

The Grand Old Fourth of July Parade in Pasco and River of Fire Festival in Kennewick will hold celebrations honoring the country's 237th birthday bash. Both cities also will feature fireworks shows starting at 10 p.m.

The air show is July 26-28 coinciding with the Unlimited Hydroplane races on the Columbia River the same weekend.
