Balloons to dot the Walla Walla sky

By the Herald staffMay 9, 2013

The wildly colorful and popular Walla Walla Balloon Stampede is May 10-12 at the Walla Walla Fairgrounds off Ninth Street.

More than a dozen multi-colored balloons will take flight this year, lifting off each morning at 6:30 a.m. for an early morning race, weather permitting.

Street dances start in early evening on May 10-11. Other festivities include a show and shine car show and Balloonsday 5/10K run May 11. The night glow, which is when the hot air balloons are inflated and illuminated at nightfall, happens May 11.

The show and shine entry fee is $15. The event is open to all car classes.

Throughout the day, there will be all sorts of food booths, arts and crafts and kids events happening at the fairgrounds.

Festival hours are from noon to 10 p.m. May 10 and from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. May 11. The festival closes after the balloon launches and pancake breakfast May 12. All events take place at the fairgrounds. Admission to the festival is free.

A champagne reception for the balloon pilots begins at 5:30 p.m. May 10 at the Marcus Whitman Hotel.

Cost is $35, and tickets must be purchased in advance at the Walla Walla Chamber office, 29 E. Sumach St., or by calling 509-525-0850.
