Letter: For progressives, tolerance is for someone else

May 5, 2013

I would like to thank Barronelle Stutzman, the owner of Arlene's Flowers, for her courage in holding to her beliefs in the recent kerfuffle regarding her choice not to become a participant in Ingersoll and Freed's marriage ceremony. Ms. Stutzman has taken a lot of heat for her stand, and now the coercive powers of the state and the courts have been brought to bear against this small business owner.

I am continually amazed at the intolerance displayed by progressives. It appears progressives are only tolerant when one shares their opinions. If you choose to challenge their orthodoxy, then you either hate the planet (global warming), support the murder of children (gun control), are waging war on women (abortion on demand), or are a bigot (homosexual marriage). As someone else has noted, progressives talk a lot about their tolerance of other points of view, but always seem surprised to discover that there actually are other points of view.

I will continue to look to Arlene's for my gift and floral needs. I wish Ms. Stutzman strength, comfort, and determination as she faces the tribulations of the coming days. My prayers are with her.
