Softball: Richland claims Mid-Col crown

May 3, 2013

Abby Perryman tripled on the first pitch she saw Friday, and the Richland softball team just kept on hitting.

The Bombers swept host Kamiakin 18-2 in five innings and 12-4 to claim the Mid-Columbia Conference title outright.

“They hit the ball all over the park and we had no answer,” Kamiakin coach Tim Bisson said. “We had our shots (in the nightcap) ... we go into the sixth up by two and didn’t play well enough to win.

“Richland is a good team and they deserve the title.”

The Bombers banged out 33 hits on the day, led by Stephanie Merwin who was a combined 6-for-9 with a triple and six RBIs.

By grabbing the top seed to the Class 4A District 5 Tournament, Richland also sewed up a berth in the regional tournament.

Kamiakin, meanwhile, still has a regular-season doubleheader with Southridge on Tuesday. The Braves, though, locked up the Class 3A No. 1 seed to the District 5/8 Tournament, when Southridge split with Chiawana on Friday.

Emily Benson and Melanie Oord both were 4-for-7 for the Braves in the sweep.
