West Richland police arrest man after Craigslist scam

Tri-City HeraldMay 3, 2013

— West Richland police arrested a Hermiston man suspected of conning a woman out of over $1,800 in a Craigslist rental scam.

23-year-old Marc A. Trujillo allegedly posted an ad on Craigslist for a rental property that was actually owned by a Navy serviceman deployed overseas and was in the process of being sold by a local realty company, Capt. Al Escalera said. The woman toured the house and gave Trujillo the money as a deposit.

On Thursday police conducted a sting operation were they posed as potential renters, making a deal with Trujillo and giving him money before arresting him, Escalera said.

Trujillo also advertised that he sold household appliances and police connected some of those items to multiple residential burglaries, Escalera said. Police ended up seizing several of the stolen items from a south Kennewick home.

West Richland police are still investigating the case to see if any other suspects were involved and how many burglaries may have been committed.
