Draft legislation for nuclear disposal open for comments

May 2, 2013

— The public can comment on draft legislation for storage and disposal of nuclear waste, including Hanford waste, at a new web page.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is seeking feedback on proposed legislation to implement recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future.

The proposed legislation would create a new agency to oversee disposition of used nuclear power fuel and defense waste, including Hanford’s vitrified high level radioactive waste and unprocessed irradiated fuel.

The draft legislation also calls for temporary storage sites and a permanent geological repository to be established based on the consent of states and communities volunteering to be sites.

The web site is at http://1.usa.gov/10Z5Mpz. Comments are due May 24.
