Softball: Utecht's home run helps Richland salvage split with Walla Walla

April 30, 2013

April Utecht hit a three-run home run to straightaway center field Tuesday, to help Richland High salvage a Mid-Columbia Conference split at Walla Walla.

Walla Walla won the opener 4-3, while Richland grabbed the nightcap 6-2.

The split keeps the league title up in the air as the Bombers have a one-game lead on the Blue Devils.

If Richland sweeps Kamiakin on Friday, then the Bombers win the title and the No. 1 seed outright.

If Richland splits and Walla Walla sweeps Hanford, then there will be a three-way tie for the league title, and the Blue Devils and Bombers will play a one-game playoff for the No. 1 seed.

Utecht finished the night cap 2-for-4 with the home run and four RBIs, while Abby Perryman was 4-for-4 for Richland. Kayla Andrews earned the victory in the circle, striking out five and walking none.

In the opener, Utecht and Andrews were retired with the tying run at second base in the opener. Utecht struck out, while Andrews grounded out to first base.

Walla Walla scored four runs with one out in the first, as Ellie Rasbach had a two-run single.

They were shut down the rest of the way offensively, but Rasbach struck out five and didn’t walk a batter to lead the Blue Devils to the victory.
