PROSSER -- Prosser's Chukar Cherries recently was honored as one of the leading Washington food processors of 2013.

Seattle Business magazine gave Chukar Cherries a silver award in the Food Processor of the Year category at the 2013 Washington Manufacturing Awards, meant to honor manufacturers who are rebuilding the state's economy through innovation and job creation.

Chukar Cherries' 25-year history of drying Northwest cherries won the company the award, according to a news release.

The company takes sweet Bing and Rainier cherries and tart Montmorency cherries and transforms them into chocolates. It processes about 250,000 pounds of cherries annually.

Its products are available at the company's Pike Place Market, Prosser and Leavenworth stores, as well as online at chukar.com.

Chukar Cherries has about 50 employees year-round, and around Christmas gets up to almost 100 employees.
