Letter: High school students of legal age should be able to excuse own absences

April 23, 2013

I am an 18-year-old at Richland High School. I don't understand why I can't call and excuse myself for being sick.

I am a responsible adult, and I don't live with my parents. I should also be able to check myself out of school for appointments. I don't skip school; I try to make it to school every day. The attendance office doesn't care how old I am.

It's so frustrating, because I am trying to make it on my own and go to school and further my education. I have no support or help from my parents, and the school needs to understand that. I want an education and my grades reflect that. Let me be responsible for myself.
