Jackie Smith must have been one heck of a kindergarten teacher at one time.

The Kennewick woman also happens to be one heck of a trainer, as her horse, Leolas Girl, won the $3,000 Dorothy Adams Buttons and Bows Handicap at 4 furlongs Sunday at Sun Downs race track in Kennewick.

But back to the kindergarten statement.

It seems that former Kennewick jockey Nikeela Black, who now lives, rides and is an attorney in Boise, was headed to Sun Downs this weekend to race some quarter horses in the American Quarter Horse Association’s Challenge trials.

“Jackie was my kindergarten teacher,” said Black. “She called me and asked me if I would ride some of her horses while I was here.”

Smith must have been a teacher who inspired. Because Black obliged, and the pairing with Leolas Girl worked like magic.

The 4-year-old filly broke from the gate, took a bump from Who Gives a Hoot, and was long gone ahead of the field. She never lost the lead after the first 50 yards, and finished a full length ahead of Sasha B and rider Luis Gonzalez.

“(Leolas Girl) is a speedball,” said Smith, whose long-time boyfriend, Lyle Magnuson, owns the filly. “She had a couple of bad races last year. We found out she was suffering from pharyngitis (infection of the throat). We took care of it, and now she’s back.”

Smith told Black, who had never ridden the horse, to just let her run.

“I said ‘Go to the front and don’t look back,’ ” Smith said. “Nothing fancy.”

Black was impressed.

“She definitely had her game on today,” said Black. “She didn’t make the turn all that great. She didn’t want to get next to the rail. But she’s got a lot of speed.”

Leolas Girl paid $6.00 to win, $4.00 to place, and $3.00 to show.

The day’s other highlights were the three Pot O’Gold Futurity trials at 300 yards, and Boardman’s Hector Magallanes had a great day.

Four of the fastest horses in the trials are trained by Magallanes, including Avatarr, which had the fastest time in the trials at 15.88 seconds.

The top 10 will compete in the Pot O’Gold Futurity on May 5.

Another good-sized crowd wagered a total handle of $52,076 over the nine races.

Trey Fecta had another rough day at the track, dropping $69. The imaginary bankroll that started at $300 is now down to $172.20 after two dates.

The meet continues next Saturday, with first post at 1 p.m. There will also be some dog races next weekend.
