Letter: Misuse of drones

April 21, 2013

Assassinations from the airspace of neutral or allied countries is contrary to the rule of law. A few terrorists are being eliminated that are out of reach by conventional methods. But at what cost? How much hatred of Americans is generated by the violation of another nation's sovereignty and any associated deaths of innocents and property damage?

The human and political repercussions of the misuse of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or drones, in countries that we are not at war with far outweighs the elimination of a few radicalized thugs. Continuing the use of drones in these countries can only further reduce any support for the United States in our so-called war on terror. Hearts and minds are never won by military force that is contrary to the rule of law.

Muslim friends and potential Muslim friends who understand the rule of law are being radicalized and estranged from us faster than any successful drone strikes of this nature. This creates an environment that encourages the recruitment of even more terrorists.
