Sun Downs jumps out of the gate with exciting start

Jeff Morrow, Herald sports editorApril 20, 2013

Scott Giltner and trainer Kurt Calton knew something was amiss with their horse, Vodka Soda No Fruit, on Saturday before the 2013 Boekenoogen Memorial at Sun Downs Race Track in Kennewick.

“We usually saddle him up during the walk from the stables to the paddock,” said Giltner, who along with his brother Bob, owns the horse. “He was standing so nice, we decided to wait to saddle until we got to the paddock.”

Big mistake.

Vodka Soda No Fruit, a seven-year-old who has earned over $62,000 in 24 career starts, was out of sorts in the paddock. He was noticeably agitated, and Calton, the trainer, tried to settle him down.

But to the dismay of everyone in the paddock area, the horse reared up in his stall, kicked the backboard, and fell over on his side.

Calton helped him up, but the horse started favoring is left rear leg.

Calton walked him around the paddock, and the horse seemed to be walking it off.

“I told our rider that if everything wasn’t OK with him, we’ll scratch,” said Giltner.

But jockey Never T. Marin, who rode Vodka Soda No Fruit to a victory in this same race a year ago, said things looked better in the parade to post.

“He was sore when we went out there,” said Marin. “But when he warmed up he felt better.”

Boys was he.

Starting in the first position on the gate, Vodka broke cleanly from the gate and led from the beginning, winning the $2,100, 250-yard feature.

Hannibal Lector, starting in the second spot, broke right at the start, leaving Vodka an clear opening.

“He just runs with his heart,” said Marin.

This was actually the third consecutive year Giltner’s horse won the Boekenoogen.

“We’ll run him in the Premier at Boise when that opens,” said Giltner. “We’ll run him until he can’t outrace the good ones.” Could be a while.

The Boekenoogen was the highlight for the first card of the Sun Downs’s six-date meet.

A large crowd turned out to wager a total handle of $65,587 on a blustery day.

Also among the highlights were the trials for the American Quarter Horse Association’s Zoetis Starter Allowance Challenge, and the Dick Monahan Maiden Challenge.

In the Starter Allowance trials, Reuben Lozano rode Ought to Azoom to the fastest time, a blazing 17.87 seconds over the 350 yards.

Lozano also rode the fastest horse in the Maiden Challenge trials, First Specialist, to an 18.12 seconds time.

Today’s nine-race card begins at 1 p.m. and feaures three Pot O’Gold Futurity trials and the $3,000 Dorothy Adams/Buttons and Bows feature for thoroughbreds at 4 furlongs.
