Letter: Gun control works -- for dictators

April 19, 2013

I don't understand all the fuss about gun control. It really does work. It's un-arguable. Just look at how well gun control worked for other countries in the past 100 years -- Turkey in 1911, the Soviet Union in 1929, China in 1935, Germany in 1938, Uganda in 1971 and Cambodia in 1975. Right after strict gun control policies were implemented in each of these countries, history's best estimate is that about 53 million people in these counties were exterminated by their respective governments/police states /dictatorships, totally unable to defend themselves because they were the "wrong" religion, the "wrong" race, the "wrong" ethnic group, too "educated," too politically incorrect or didn't agree with the government's plans at that time.

Each time government leaders want to commit these atrocities on a grand scale on their own citizens, the first order of business is to slowly restrict, then outright ban, private possession of weapons. It was the standard method of operations for all these countries.

The terms gun control and Genocide nearly always go together. Remember what George Santayana said: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
