Golf: Hanford's Martin wins Palouse Ridge Invite

April 18, 2013

Hanford’s Tanner Martin won medalist honors and the Falcons took home the team title at the Palouse Ridge Invitational on the Washington State University campus.
Martin and Cody Beaver of Post Falls each finished the 18-hole event with a 4-under par 68. Martin won the playoff on the 18th hole with a birdie, while Beaver bogeyed.
“He went first and hit it in the bunker,” said Martin, who noted that 68 was his best score of the year. “I knew I had to hit it better. When you get into the bunker, it’s hard to birdie the hole. The hole kind of sets up for me because it dog legs left and gets narrow where the drive ends.”
Martin, a junior, had two eagles during the round, on No. 10 and No. 15, helping his team shoot par.
“Even par is really good for a team,” Martin said. “It was chilly and there was about a 15 mph wind — some holes it would help and others it wouldn’t.”
The Falcons combined for a score of 288, six strokes better than runner-up Coeur d’Alene (294). Southridge (312) finished fifth in the team standings, while Othello was 21st (377) and Prosser 22nd (379).
Hanford’s Zach Betzsold finished third overall with a 70, while Southridge’s Nick Mandell finished tied for fourth with a 71.
The tournament featured 26 schools from the 1A level to 4A, from Washington and Idaho.
