SOFTBALL: Othello earns doubleheader sweep of West Valley

While Othello pitchers Madison Martinez and Kim Bullis kept West Valley’s bats quiet, the Huskies were pounding the hide off the ball in a 5-0, 19-0 doubleheader sweep of visiting West Valley on Saturday.

Othello had 31 hits on the day in sweeping the visiting Rams in a CWAC doubleheader.

Martinez allowed three hits and struck out 10 in the opener, while Daisy Salgado went 4-for-4 at the plate. In the second game, Bullis struck out four, while Martinez, Holly Fleshman and Kalinda Kosters each has three hits.

Burbank 8-4, Royal 7-3: Brittany Cotsford went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base in a Game 1 win, then struck out eight batters to get the win in Game 2, clinching an SCAC East sweep of the Knights.

The Coyotes trailed 7-0 in the opener but scored seven runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score.

Connell 20-20, Wahluke 0-0: Ashley Thompson struck out 14 and threw a perfect game in the opener as Connell opened the SCAC season with a sweep of visiting Wahluke.

Thompson also went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, while Hope Fawyer drove in four runs.

In the second game, Thompson had 15 strikeouts and fell short of a perfect game after hitting a Wahluke batter.

Michelle Schultz hit a home run and drove in two runs, while Thompson had a double and three RBIs.

Asotin 3-8, Tri-Cities Prep 1-5: Victoria Vargas and Danika Whitsett had solid performances in the circle for Tri-Cities Prep, but 19 combined errors on the day were too hard to overcome as Asotin swept the Jaguars in Southeast 2B action in Pasco.

Vargas allowed three hits and struck out eight in the opener, while Whitsett gave up three hits and struck out 10 in the night cap.

“We just struggled making routine plays in the field,” TCP coach Dan Whitsett said. “(Asotin pitcher McKenzie) Mullins kept our bats quiet and from putting together anything substantial.”

In the opener, the Patriots had a 5-1 lead before giving up a pair of runs to the Vandals.

Sarah Croskrey was 5-for-8 on the day for the Patriots, with a triple, two doubles and four RBIs.

In the second game, Harlie Schaeffer struck out seven in picking up the win. At the plate, she was 2-for3 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Kamiakin 9-16, Walla Walla 8-17: Kathy Castilleja drove in Jessica Edminster with two outs in the bottom of the ninth of Game 2, giving the Braves a 9-8 win Friday night in an MCC doubleheader split with the visiting Blue Devils.

Wa-Hi picked up the win in the nightcap, however, by erasing an early 5-0 deficit and winning on a two-run home run by Mattie Smyth in the top of the eighth inning.
