Seek spiritual enlightenment

Recent random violent acts throughout the country have gripped the nation in a major dilemma.

The violent acts have devastated the lives and left families deprived of the joy of being with their loved ones. Many innocent lives have been cut short by people who do not have the ability to control their evil vices that encourage their violent acts. In order to control these vices it is necessary to have proper mental balance as per guidance contained in Guru Granth, the Sikh scripture.

The importance of mental balance is that it keeps the person content and happy. However, mental imbalance causes all sorts of problems for people.

Imbalance of mind might occur because of various reasons such as birth defects, upbringing, or some profound stressful event in one's life. The imbalanced mind because of a birth defect is not in anyone's control. However, the latter two conditions may be mitigated or controlled with proper actions of people or with proper treatments.

The teachings of Guru Granth imply that the major factor of random violent acts are committed because of an imbalanced mind. And the mind can be balanced by spiritually enlightening oneself, helping one to understand that all humans are created equal.

Guru Granth states that, "The Lord created light first and He created all humans from it, then who can one be good and who can be bad?" (1349-19). Keeping this teaching in mind, the feelings of brotherhood among one's own ethnic groups -- and diverse communities -- will flourish when we realize that we all are his creation and part of one big family. The violent acts will diminish.

To mitigate violent acts, a great deal of legislation regarding new laws is being thought of for implementation. This will certainly have some positive impact, however, the problem can never be completely eliminated. The reason being that the mental health of society is at stake and that needs to be addressed to meaningfully balance the mind. The doctors and other professionals, including religious custodians of various faiths, can be key in providing this needed help.

In my opinion, out of all the methods to cure and control evil vices because of an imbalanced mind, the solution lies in the spiritual aspect which society in general ignores the most.

This spiritual aspect could be enhanced by following the guidance that is provided in various faith scriptures. Priests or other religious scholars would elevate the process, educating people to conduct themselves per their faith's principles. The results, I believe, will be very rewarding.

Understanding the reason for violent acts because of an imbalanced mind repeatedly is emphasized in Guru Granth. Lust, anger, greed, obsession and ego, among others vices, are the most powerful evils which control humanity. The violent acts mentioned are the result and proof of these vices.

May we all enlighten ourselves spiritually -- and then our world will be a better place to live.
