Softball: Bombers live up to name in sweep

The Richland Bombers didn’t waste any time getting back into the swing of things in Mid-Columbia Conference softball after a two-week hiatus.

Stephanie Merwin and April Utecht combined to hit four home runs and drive in 11 RBIs as the Bombers lived up to their name in a 25-2 rout of Kennewick. Earlier, Richland downed the Lions 13-2 as Utecht and Kayla Andrews each drove in three runs.

All told, Richland hit eight home runs and 16 extra base hits. Merwin, a freshman leadoff hit, hit for the cycle on the day.

Chiawana 7-1, Hanford 6-11: The Falcons rallied from a Game 1 loss to overwhelm the Riverhawks in the nightcap in an MCC doubleheader in Richland.

Emma Garcia went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Miranda Foraker ended the game with one out in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double that invoked the 10-run mercy rule.

“We just got after in (in Game 2). We made routine plays defensively, and if we can do that all the time, we’re pretty tough,” Hanford coach Lesley Guereca said.

In the opener, Chiawana trailed 5-2 after four innings before getting five runs in the top of the fifth. Maddie Heine led the Riverhawks with two hits, including an RBI double.

DeSales 10-13, Dayton 0-0: Aliz Zander hit a two-run homer, and Ashlyn Lyons threw a pair of two-hit shutouts to lead the Irish to a Southeast 2B sweep on the road.
