Accused Selah child molester takes plea deal

April 11, 2013

A 20-year-old Selah man accused of molesting a 9-year-old girl agreed to a plea deal Wednesday that will put him away for at least 10 years.

Alan Ray French pleaded guilty in Yakima County Superior Court to a charge of first-degree molestation of a child. Sentencing was set for May 21, following a pre-sentence investigation.

French was accused of molesting the girl Nov. 1 while visiting at a home in east Selah.

Under the terms of the deal, French faces a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and could get up to life, depending on a future determination by the state parole board.

The conviction counts as a first strike under both Washington’s two-strikes-you’re-out law for sex crimes and the state’s more encompassing three-strikes law.

French also has to register as a sex offender for life and is barred by court order from contact with children for life.

He had a criminal record as a juvenile in Kittitas County that included a conviction in 2008 on two counts of first-degree molestation.

Deputy prosecutor Codee McDaniel said both the victim’s family and law enforcement were in favor of the plea agreement.
