List of candidates for Richland superintendent shortens

The Richland School District Board narrowed its list of superintendent candidates over the weekend.

Board Chairman Rick Jansons said the board is focusing on a “half dozen” candidates from the Northwest who will be brought in for initial interviews on April 9 and 10. Three candidates will then be brought back for a second round of interviews April 16-18.

Jansons said all of the candidates have experience working as a superintendent and the board will be looking for someone who will get the most out of their staff.

“We’re looking for someone to continue the work that the school district is doing, while bringing leadership qualities that will bring further innovations to the Richland School District,” he said. “It’s a great school district already. We’re looking for somebody the community deserves.”

The district fired former Superintendent Jim Busey in January after an investigation revealed he violated the morality clause of his contract by having a relationship with a district employee.

Busey is suing the district and every board member for discrimination and improperly firing him. He is seeking $1 million in damages.

Jansons said the board will announce the three finalists on April 10 and he hopes to have a superintendent selected April 18.
