Baseball: Southridge sweeps Hanford late

March 29, 2013

Southridge 9-17, Hanford 8-16: Grant Lathim hit a two-out double in the top of the 10th inning to help the Suns eke past the Falcons in Game 1 on Friday.

The second game was another squeaker. Hanford, which had let a six-run lead disappear in the early innings, came back with six runs over the final two frames, but the Falcons’ rally fell short.

“They made the pitches when they had to,” Hanford coach Tom DeWitz said of the Suns. “They got us out, and they outhit us both games. They really did a good job of making our pitchers throw to them.”

Conner O’Neil had a grand slam and finished Game 2 with five RBIs for Southridge, while Hanford’s Isaac Benard also drove in five runs.

In the next game, it was Walla Walla’s turn to strike in the eighth. That time, two runs scored on a dropped catch, and another runner came home on a passed ball.

“We went out and battled and competed,” Chiawana coach Dave Price said. “We came out with a split. That’s all we could ask for.”
