Letter: Put an end to drunk driving for all our sakes

March 29, 2013

In 2011, the United States had 8,583 total firearm murders. And 6,220 of those were from handguns, while 323 were from rifles and 356 from shotguns. Anyone can look these numbers up on the FBI website.

Knives were used in 1,694 murders, blunt objects in 496 and hands and feet in 726. A quick jump to MADD.org and you will see in 2011 we had 9,878 deaths from drunken drivers. So what makes gun control more important than drunken driving? Is driving drunk a constitutional right? Was there an amendment our forefathers wrote that said "being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to intoxicate and then drive vehicles, shall not be infringed?"

Sarcasm aside, it's just food for thought. So please, drink responsibly and help our local economy by paying for the taxi.
