Golf: Richland High's McCullough flirts with Canyon Lakes course record

March 27, 2013

Richland High’s Drew McCullough was hotter than the spring weather Wednesday.

McCullough fired a 9-under-par 63 at the Canyon Lakes Invitational in Kennewick, flirting with the course record throughout his round.

The course record is 61, and he pulled within a stroke of that on the par 5 15th after a birdie, but couldn’t quite reach the record.

His blistering round was good enough for first place, as Southridge’s Nick Mandell took second at 68.

Richland won the event with a 279 — which is 9-under as a group — setting the record for low round in the four-year history of the event. Hanford took second at 302 and Southridge third at 316.

McCullough started his day by driving the par-4 first hole and making a 25-foot eagle putt. He continued his strong play throughout, holding off Mandell who recorded a double-bogey on No. 18 to finish 4-under.

Richland’s Hunter Thompson and Hanford’s Tanner Martin tied for third place at 69.
