Hanford song 'Furlough Comes' strikes a chord on YouTube

March 27, 2013

Jason Strickling of Pasco has created what may be the new Hanford theme song, "Furlough Comes," sung to the tune of the Banana Boat Song.

“D-DOE say, furlough come and we got to go home,” he sings. “Tanks are leaking and governor’s mad.”

About 2,500 Hanford workers are being required to take time off because of forced federal budget cuts.

Strickling, the husband of a Hanford worker, posted the song, made with Apple’s GarageBand app, on YouTube Tuesday. Wednesday evening it had been listened to 301 times.

The song is tongue-in-cheek, meant to take the sting out of the furlough hit in his own household this summer, he said.

“You have to have a sense of humor,” he said.

Music is a hobby for him as he juggles multiple jobs, including stay-at-home dad, part-time chaplain, fitness instructor and support pastor at Columbia Community Church.
