Moses Lake — An 8-year-old Ephrata boy died Saturday evening in a two-vehicle crash that closed Highway 17 north of here for nearly four hours.
Daniel VazquezLopez was pronounced dead at the scene after an SUV in which he was a passenger swerved across the center line and crashed into an oncoming vehicle, according to a Washington State Patrol report.
The crash was reported at 6:25 p.m. at Milepost 63, about eight miles north of Moses Lake.
According to the report, the boy was not wearing a seat belt while riding in a 2000 Toyota 4Runner driven by Teresa VazquezLopez, 50, of Ephrata. She was driving north on Highway 17 when her SUV left the roadway to the right and she overcorrected, swerving back onto the highway and striking a southbound vehicle.
Teresa VazquezLopez, who was wearing a seatbelt, was injured and airlifted to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, where she was listed in stable condition Sunday morning.
Danny L. Oneal, 57, of Othello, drove the second vehicle, a 2013 Toyota Highlander. Both he and passenger Tamra S. Oneal, 57, of Othello, were injured in the crash and transported by ambulance to Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake. The extent of their injuries was not immediately available Sunday morning.
Both SUVs were totalled in the crash, which closed Highway 17 from 6:30 to nearly 10:30 p.m. between mileposts 62 and 64. Traffic was rerouted along McConhie Road.
No alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. The Washington State Patrol said the accident remains under investigation.
