Hanford boys soccer tops Pasco 3-0 in MCC matchup

By the Tri-City HeraldMarch 23, 2013

Mike Pardini is as much a part of Pasco’s proud soccer tradition as anyone, winning a 4A state championship as a player in 1999 and then as the Bulldogs’ head coach in 2007.

On Saturday, the first-year Hanford coach faced his former team for the first time, and his job was to find a way to beat them.

After a scoreless first half, Rolando Tobon broke the tie with a goal off an assist from Mario Zarate in the 56th minute, and Joseph Ghirardo padded the lead with a goal four minutes later as the Falcons topped Pasco 3-0 in a Mid-Columbia Conference matchup.

“It’s always tough for any coach to face a team he’s had some history with,” Pardini said. “But that’s Matt Potter’s team now, and my loyalty is with Hanford.”

The Bulldogs neutralized the Falcons’ attack for the first 50 minutes before Pardini began to make a few adjustments.

“Pasco made it real tough for us, but the main thing for us was weathering the storm,” Pardini said. “Kelly Smith had a fantastic game in back. We were able to create some opportunities using our back line.”

Jacob Bogen added a third goal for Hanford in the 74th minute.

Jacob Thiel recorded five saves for the shutout.
