Colleges: Roberts earns first victory of season for Central Washington baseball

Central Washington’s Tyler Roberts earned his first victory of the season, leading the Wildcats to a 5-1 victory in the nightcap of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader against Saint Martin’s in Ellensburg.

Central won the first game 8-2.

Roberts, a Southridge High graduate, allowed one run on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 52⁄3 innings.

Fellow Southridge grad Kyle Sani was 1-for-5 with a double, RBI and two walks, while Othello grad Marc Garza was 0-for-6 with a run scored.

CBC alum Mario Sanelli was 2-for-9 with an RBI for Saint Martin’s in Ellensburg.

Gonzaga 9, San Francisco 5: Walla Walla CC alum Alex Bonczyk was 0-for-1 with a walk in the Bulldogs’ West Coast Conference home victory.

UCLA 5, Washington 0: Nick Vander Tuig threw a seven-hit shutout, striking out eight to lead the Bruins to the Pac-12 home victory.

Oregon 8, USC 4: Scott Heineman was 3-for-6 with two RBIs as the Ducks picked up the Pac-12 road win.

Saint Mary’s 3, Utah Valley 0: Kamiakin grad Shawn O’Brien was 0-for-1 in the Gaels’ home victory.

Arizona State 4, Washington State 1: The Sun Devils picked up their first Pac-12 win with a victory over the visiting Cougars.

Softball

Corban 11-15, Eastern Oregon 2-3: Kamiakin graduate Katie Martell was 2-for-5 with a run scored as the Mountaineers were swept in a Cascade Collegiate Conference doubleheader in Salem.

Hermiston grads Hanna Findley (0-for-3) and Gracie Flyg (0-for-2) also saw playing time.

College of Charleston 7-4, Elon 3-3: Walla Walla grad Hope Klicker struck out eight while allowing three runs — one earned — on eight hits in seven innings. She earned her eighth win on the season in the opener.

Saint Martin’s 2-3, Central Washington 1-7: Walla Walla grad Jill McDaniels was 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, three RBIs and a stolen base for the host Wildcats.

Wa-Hi’s Andrea Hamada was 2-for-6 with four RBIs and Hanford’s Remy Bradley was 1-for-4 with a stolen base.

Kennewick’s Taylor Bakos was 1-for-3 with a run for Saint Martin’s.

Seattle splits in California: Kamiakin grad Allegra Wilde was 1-for-3 with two RBIs in a 6-5 victory over Loyola Marymount and 1-for-3 with a run scored in a 10-2 loss to Cal-State Northridge in California.

Track and field

Dusty Lane Open: Lewis-Clark State College’s Kaytlyn Coleman qualified for the NAIA outdoor national championships in the hammer throw at the meet in Spokane.

Coleman, a freshman from Kennewick, qualified with a throw of 48.65 meters, which was good for fourth. She also took ninth in the discus with a throw of 38.71.

Hermiston grad Michelle Coombs earned a Big Sky Conference qualifying mark, throwing 146-5 in the javelin for Eastern Washington. Southridge’s Emma Murillo also qualified in the event, throwing 134-10.

Kamiakin grad Elise Jepsen qualified, clearing 5-5 in the high jump, while Richland grad Joey Payne qualified in the javelin with a throw of 205-9.
